Stefan Prins: Inhabit

“inhabit” the second release by Stefan Prins on Sub Rosa label, brings together four recent, large-scale compositions composed by Prins after 2020. From my perspective, it features an exceptional recording of his electric guitar concerto (“Under_Current”) which got its premiere a year before at the Donaueschinger Musiktage festival. With an additional performance taking place in Luxembourg, the ground was well set for a recording session the following year at Glasgow’s City Halls. Conductor Ilan Volkov and the BBC Scottish symphony orchestra delivered a great performance. Andrew Trinick & Alison Rhynas from the BBC team did their magic and my long time friend and collaborator, Stefano Bechini, did the mixing and mastering of the whole album.

This release is a co-production with Deutschlandfunk Kultur and BBC Radio 3 and was made possible by the generous support of the Flemish Community (Flanders State of the Art), the Nadar Ensemble, Ensemble Mosaik, and EnsembleKollektiv Berlin, along with all the musicians involved.

Soul, Soul, Soul, Sweet Soul.

Soul, Soul, Soul, Sweet Soul. is a distorted lullaby trippin’ through the tangled wires of composer-performer relations making it my most personal and creatively challenging effort to date. Offering a wide range of approaches to playing and co-authorship, all roads lead to the album’s central theme: “Where does the composer end and the interpreter begin?” Elusive as love, the question remains unanswered, and yet, the riddle is the medium is the message.

Credits:
Helena Persson created a beautiful sound installation piece (Sanen Song) which I played over; Stefan Prins composed a concerto for electric guitar and orchestra (Under_Current) from which I took the guitar part and restructured it into a stand alone work (Sub_Current); Matthew Shlomowitz wrote an etude for two electric guitars (Hocket for Dylan & Alan) which Tom Pauwels & myself recorded as a first step from which I took the material and remixed it into a new sonic collage (Greetings from Astridplein) using a bunch of field recordings Tom provided. Stefano Bechini mixed and mastered the music, Amit Elkayam took pictures, and Harel Schreiber (Harel & Maayan Studio) did the design. A handful of people to whom I am endlessly grateful.
